Fantastisch!

Niets zo geweldig om te zien als de muzikale ontwikkeling die de Canadese band Patrick Watson sinds de ontdekking in 2007 op meerdere fronten heeft doorgemaakt. Eerste album met de naar Patrick Watson vernoemde band Close To Paradise liet al bijzonder mooie, rijkelijk aangeklede en gearrangeerde liedjes horen, bijna buitenaards mooi gezongen bovendien, in een goeie Jeff Buckley-traditie. Nieuw album Wooden Arms - de band wordt nu her en der ook aangeduid als Patrick Watson & The Wooden Arms - is in alles de overtreffende trap van de voorganger, met meer inventieve ideeën, experimenteerdrift, rijkdom en pure, ongrijpbare schoonheid uit de pen van de 30-jarige Watson. En laat die enorme ontwikkeling nu ook eens ronduit verbluffend doorzetten naar het podium, zo kon ook een ramvolle Melkweg Max dinsdagavond zien.

Met ook nog een volmaakte uitvoering van The Great Escape in de toegift, is er geen twijfel meer mogelijk. Als die er al was. Patrick Watson bewijst zich met de nieuwe plaat en dit soort optredens dubbel en dwars als het übergetalenteerde wonderkind in de hedendaagse indie. We blijven zijn avonturen gaarne volgen, zeker als ze zo verbluffend mooi blijven.

Gisteravond concert van Andrew Bird ter ere van zijn Noble Beast album release.

# January 20, 2009 - Andrew Bird releases Noble Beast on Fat Possum Records. The self-produced album consists of 14 original songs recorded primarily at the Beech House in Nashville, with additional recording taking place at various Chicago and Minneapolis locations over a period of five months. As usual, Bird handles violin, vocals, whistling and guitar, with back-up from live cohorts Martin Dosh (percussion, looping, keys), Jeremy Ylvisaker (guitar, bass, organ, shortwave) and more recently Mike Lewis, plus a supporting cast including Kelly Hogan, Todd Sickafoose, and the band Loney Dear.

Wat is ten eerste Paradiso toch een prachtige zaal en wat is Andrew Bird een goede muzikant. Wat mij betreft beste concert van het jaar (tot nu toe... ).
